Vietnam Military History Museum

Vietnam Military History Museum is also known as Military Museum, inaugurated in 1959 on the occasion of 15 years of Vietnamese Military Day, this is one of the oldest museums in Hanoi and is particularly interesting for those wishing to learn about Vietnam military history, because most of the country’s history is about war and fighting for independence.  There are both indoors and outdoors sections with display of military-related artifacts. Its exhibition dated back to as early as Hung Vuong Era, which is considered as the start of Vietnam as a country, the first thousand year of being colonized by Chinese is elaborately depicted, as well as the century struggle against French colony.

The period from 1954 to 1975, corresponding with Vietnam War and the division of North-South is also well documented at the Military museum Hanoi. Most artifacts, exhibition, films and photos revolve around the tradition of Vietnamese as being courageous and insistent in protecting national integrity; certain technologies in adapting and producing weapons; and the diplomatic relationship between Vietnamese military with its counterparts elsewhere in the world.

For more than 50 years of establishment and development, the Vietnam Military History Museum is one of seven national museums and the top of Military museum system of Vietnam. Until now, the warehouse of this museum contains up to more than 150,000 objects on display with precious values in term of history, culture, science, which are preserved in the area of 7,200 m2. The exhibition system has reconstituted so clearly about the history of Vietnam from its establish in Hung Vuong King to Ho Chi Minh time, reflecting some prominent fights against the enemies and expressing the talent mind of Vietnamese leaders, their military strategy, military arts, etc. The outdoor exhibition area may be the most attractive place because it keeps the huge evidences of the war like: a Soviet-built MiG-21 jet fighter, triumphant amid the wreckage of French aircraft downed at Dien Bien Phu, and a US F-111..

The Vietnam Military History Museum has welcomed more than 17 millions of tourists with significantly 2,141,735 of them are foreign tourists from 150 countries all over the world. It really becomes the center of culture, history, attracting destination for travelers to visit and understand more about the proud Vietnamese military history.
